have a 73 swinger. bypassed the br using an internal resistor coil. key switch was bad so installed a push button for start(for run using the column switch) car will only start and run when button is released

Er.... Hows that working out?

Not sure. Was there a question?

I keep hearing about ballast resistors failing, I've lost only one across four /6's in the last 30 years. Maybe I'm blessed....

Hope we can help, let us know what you're shooting at...!

There are two different circuits going to your coil, IGN 1 & IGN 2
One puts a full 12 volts directly to the coil when the starter cranks, the other, routes the current through the ballist resistor when the engine is running. (when the key is in the "on" (run) position)

You stated that you swicth-on the key (run) and then hit the button to energize the starter. In theory, this should work but recheck your circuit. You may want to jump 12V from the button to the coil and see if that will fix the problem.
