Post subject: | Dutra Dual Major Problem--Help! |
OK, I managed to score front and back Dutra castings, and don't have to worry about preheating problems because I'm going to run propane. But my truck has the HIGH starter and the rear outlet lets out directly onto it. I thought I would have plenty of room. ![]() So--how to salvage the situation? Tight turn off the rear outlet?? Any help would be deeply appreciated. Joe |

I think there is a tech article somewhere on this forum that deals with that issue. Instead of clicking the mouse on" messages", click on " articles" |

Doc posted a pic a while back... You're gonna have to convert to a new type mini starter to get the size down, make a heat shield (or get one of the 360/5.9L Magnum starters that already has one on it)... It's a real tight turn over the top of the starter then you're home free... -D.Idiot |

I did the mini starter thing first and then later did the double Dutra duals, and the mini starter is better anyway. I got tired of buying poorly rebuilt "rebuilt" starters tht failed before the car was even back down off the jacks. That's is no joke. The mini starter was the last one I have had to buy. Sam |

Fifty-- Couldn't find the article. All I saw was adapting a stock manifold to duals. Other folks-- I already have the mini starter. It just looks like a really really tight fit. Thanks for the advice. Joe |

I thought that was it. I know I saw it on here somewhere. Maybe someone else can point it out, but at any rate I think the info has already been covered here. |

At the bottom of this article http://www.dutra.org/doug/doug-sl6-exha ... xhaust.htm theres a link to this article http://www.dutra.org/doug/doug-sl6-exha ... -duals.htm It is a tight fit - pic at bottom right - but it works. I have the manifolds, will chuck the headers and do same conversion in the summer probably. |

Depending on the Dutra manifold and the starter you have, you may need to grind some material off the bottem of the outlet flange to get the starter to fit. The mini starter gives you more room to work with. DD |

I remember there was some company that made the ministarters that you could pivot into different locations. Powermater? May be worth investigating to gain a bit more clearance. Doc, I'm guessing you mean the manifolds with with oval flanges provide a bit more clearance then rectangular flange models? |

I did have to grind some material away from the rear manifold, but it was no big deal. I just kept fussing with it until it fit. I put a heat shield on the starter, but it eventually came off, and I just left it off. It has not been a problem as near as i can tell. The shield was held on with a kind of mini-hose clamp. It was just too crowded down in there after I got the turbo on to get back in and fool with it. Sam |
