Hey all, I'm a complete timing newb and I've searched the forums a great deal and haven't quite found anything that answers my questions..
I have a 64 Dodge dart with a 170 in it I just rebuilt a carb I had gotten from a fellow slant sixer (Thanks Dave!) And it fired right up idles pretty smooth and then dropps off. Also when I try to accelerate it shoots about a 1 foot flame from the carb! From my limited knowledge I would venture to say I need to retard the timing, what do you think? I took the cap off and everything in there was very clean and nothing appeared broken.. I just don't know enough about this strange thing called timing..

I hear alot about rotating the distributor body to retard timing, how is that done? I can't find anything on mine that I can rotate..
So far this seems like the only thing holding me up from driving it and it's so nice out I'm really gettin to itch!!

Do you have a timing light?
If not, start looking around for one, this is a tool you will need.

Ask around, friends & family... May-be you can borrow one.
This is a common item that any automotive "hobbiest" would have.

I have two. Never paid a dime for them. Best to ask an older relative or friend who looks like they might know something about older cars. They'll possibly let you 'borrow' theirs in exchange for you listening to their advice and war stories about some beat up old junk they use to drive. An agreeably price, if you ask me.
