I just got a 86 Dodge Ram with the slant 6. Me and my roomate wanted to take it up to race it in the slant 6 division just for fun is there any bolt on or minor things we can do to gain a little power? Thanks. |

Flip the air cleaner lid, or better, run some hose from the air cleaner housing to the grille or at least away from the engine compartment--you want cool air, not hot air off the engine. Remove all unnecessary weight--while a few pounds out back might help with initial traction (in a pickup), after the first 10 feet it should hook up and any extra weight will slow you down. Maybe go with a quarter tank too. You could, for fun, try removing the hood and doors--ala CaddyHack (old Hot Rod article) but a bit more limited. A bit extreme though. You should check the overflow tank and the belts, and make sure that surprises are limited when you're at the track. Use fresh oil, good plugs, make sure it's in tune. If you uncork the exhaust, make sure it doesn't lean out too much. Beyond that, I think you're talking time/money involved (Super Six, cam, etc). I'd just do a check-over, make sure nothing (or not much) will break, and just have some fun. |

Run your fuel tank down to about a 1/4 full. Gas weighs 6 lbs./gallon. Every 100 pounds off the vehicle should net you about 1/10 second in the 1/4 mile. |

Engine off, air filter off, have someone hold the gas pedal to the floor, and look down the carb to make sure it opens all the way. Seen partial carb opening more then once. |
