Post subject:  seeking advice on refinishing the rear deck dash, speakers

Hello all!

Wow, am I thrilled to see that the slantsix forums are back!!!

Anyway, I was hoping to get some advice on what to do with the old dirty and faded rear deck dash in my 68 Dart.

I want to put some speakers in back there, but I want them to be totally hidden (because I live in a crack neighborhood).

I was thinking I could get some thin plywood and cut to the same shape as the panel piece that is currently in there. Then, I could paint it black, cut the holes for the speakers, and then cover the whole surface with black fabric (fix with 3M Spray Trim Adhesive).

My hope is that this way the speakers would be "invisible"...

Not sure what kind of fabric! Something that will let the air through easily for the speakers.

I would love to find some after market 6x9 grill that is essentially a flat reinforced metal screen.. something to put between the fabric and speaker that would have zero profile.

Well, advice and comments appreciated!

thanks guys! (so happy to see this board is back!)

This board never really left (though it was painfully slow for a while there).

Anyway, your plan sounds solid, but you don't really need any special grills for 6x9's. If it were me, I'd get some of that "honeycomb" mesh the tuners are using (or something similar) and just sandwich it in underneath the fabric. You could get actual speaker grill material, but I'd probably just go to your local craft store and find some tweed kinda stuff. Another option would be burlap. You probably won't find it in black, but it does take paint rather well.

If you want "real" stuff, you might try http://www.Parts-Express.com. Their website seems to be having some issues right now, but when I did business with them a few years ago they were great.
