I am needing a package tray - the shelf behind the rear seat - and I find them listed at both Jim's and Layson's. Given the experience of others in dealing with these vendors I'd rather purchase somewhere else. I'm pretty sure neither of these outfits actually make the parts so who does? Layson's uses the same part number as Jim's but they prefix it with "RM" is that a clue? Any ideas?

I usually try to get stuff from a company called the paddock they have ok prices and i have not had any bad experiences with them yet (but what i found about dealing with anyone who is not right in front of you at the time it can always get screwed up) the web site is www.paddockparts.com

This might sound odd, but has anyone here made a package tray out of thin Luan plywood, then covered it with cloth?

As most of you know, I am a parts hound. I love tracking down "unavailable" stuff. It's extra-sweet when I find a way of bypassing disreputable sources and saving money into the bargain.

Those package trays are manufactured by REM Automotive in Pennsylvania. They actually produce two different trays for these cars: PLY741 for '60-'61 Valiants, and PLY102 for '62 Valiants (these trays also fit Lancers). I just got off the phone with their R&D manager, who confirmed that the dimensions and fitment are identical between these two. The difference is at the leading edge where the package tray meets the top of the rear seat. The '60-'61 tray (PLY741) has soft vinyl sewed to the edge of the fibreboard, while the '62 tray (PLY102) has the fibreboard folded downward at this edge. My guess is that the '62 tray was a cost-reduction item at the factory. Nevertheless, you get your choice between those two styles, at the same price. Retail from REM is a little over $35 for either tray, which undercuts Layson by $9 and Jim's by $24. Don't know what colours REM offer, but it's practically guaranteed that none of them (except black, I guess) would match your original interior, so you'd want to paint to match. See my thread here for how-to info.

REM don't presently make kickboards for the '60-'62 Valiant/Lancer, but they will soon...I'm sending in my '62's originals! I would also like to send them an original '60-'62 underhood insulation pad. They are all the same in those years. I had one at one point, but it's long gone. Anyone want to volunteer such an item for nondestructive reproduction?

I think I still have an underhood pad but it's not in very good shape. I wouldn't care about getting it back even since that's one of the items I had hoped to replace. I'll look tonight when I get home.

Thanks for the info about REM - that's good news and it matches with Layson's RM prefix. I wonder if they'll ever catch on and change their part numbers to better disguise the source.

I owe you one Dan!

Yeah, I'll be interested to learn the actual condition of your underhood pad. Basically what's needed is an accurate outline. If yours is degraded such that a good outline can't be had, then I would send the pad itself *and* make your best possible template out of brown kraft paper, clearly and accurately showing the placement of all the clip holes etc.

As far as how I found REM: It wasn't through Layson's part numbers!

Oh, I'm sure of that, but they do have a habit of prefixing their numbers which could give a clue. Another clue that there was an underlying supplier was the same "PLY102" part number at both Jim's and Layson's. At any rate, thanks for your efforts and I will definitely look for that pad. It was pretty ratty and really loaded with soot and road grime but I don't think I threw it away. For what it's worth, it looks like REM also makes sunvisors and a number of other useful goodies. God help my budget!

I do have it, and it's in better shape than I remembered.

Im glad that this thread popped up as I would have thought finding a repro package shelf for a 60 Val would have been impossible.I had already decided to make one but for $35 it wouldnt be practical.
You never cease to amaze me Dan,Thank you.

I think David's hood pad is probably quite suitable for repro purposes, but just in case, what's the condition of your own?

I got it rolled up and put in a box. Tomorrow I'll try to get it sealed up and shipped out.

generally about the same as David's -- I do not think is is torn yet -- but it is starting to sag. I'll check this weekend & shoot some pics --if condition is much better than David's.

I made a package tray out of pressboard/chipboard and painted it and it turned out pretty good. When I added speakers, I cut oval holes in the pressboard and covered the whole thing with colored burlap from a fabric store. The burlap doesn't seem to muffle the speakers at all.

Measure carefully to cut the proper curvature so that it fits well under the rear window.

I removed the back seats and covered the space with pressboard and burlap (back seat delete plate!), so I'm not sure how well this will work with seats installed.

I have a couple of orig pkg trays for my Volare (that pegboard material but no peg holes) I was thinking of buying a piece of Masonite or maybe paneling and using mine as a template to make a new one... something different. Ive seen some repop hood pads for these around $30 on Ebay. Good enuf, my car's not meant to be numbers matching anyway.
