Post subject:  Rear Dutra Dual--No Go for high starter

Using a Dutra Dual on the rear three cylinders of my truck with a high starter is completely impossible, as far as I can tell. I could not get the exhaust to go over the starter for love or money.

So I ended up cutting the old manifold and using that as a rear. So far it runs smoother and may have more top end.

The experience with the Dutra rear was deeply frustrating, though.

FWIW,

Are you using a stock starter? Mini starters work, its a close fit. Check this link for pictures

So, what is the going price for a "used" Dutra Dual casting?

Yep. Mini-starter. I even re-routed some of the wiring on it. Slant--

I'm not sure I want to sell it. I need to look at where the starter is on another engine I've got out at a friend's house.

What's it worth to you? It's been jet-hot coated silver and the part of the flange that hits the block has been ground off. Do you have a lower mounting starter?

Theres either a high or low starter mount position for slants. If you can't replicate whats in the picture either theres a variance in the starter or the casting itself. I know Doc has two, maybe more versions of the flange. That combined with a starter thats "clocked" at a slightly different angle....

This is a 225 /6 right?

This is a good question because there is no way the Dutra manifold will go onto the rear 3 cylinders of a "low block" 170 SL6

I sent you a PM, I would like you to send me your manifold so I can do a fit check and take some measurements.

Joe's truck has an RG engine (225). I helped spin wrenches on it once upon a time.

Its an A-727 automatic with a "high mount" starter. I haven't seen it since he's started his propane conversion and dual exhaust so I'm exactly sure what hits what, but I thought I'd clarify the engine type since he hasn't responded yet. I know there are multiple starter configurations for the slant-6, and I'm far from knowledgeable on the implications of the different locations, "clocking" options, etc.

Yes, as Steve (Mr. 440) said, it is a 225. I'll check my personal messages. Joe

Uhmmm... RG727 trans may be the cause of the problem.
I need to check the ring gear sizes between the 904 and the 727.
If the ring gear is larger on the 727, that would account for the higher starter and the outlet interferance problem.

That looks like the problem. 727 ring gear is 13 inch, compared to 12 inch for the 904.

D'oh! Forgot about that tranny. Wait a second, any time I've seen torque converters the 727 and 904 ones were the same. Or is this RG727 a one off piece?
