Post subject: | Intake/exhaust gasket for a turbo motor |
Last night on the ride home I developed a slight exhaust leak near the choke pocket where the manifolds bolt to the head. Upon closer inspection today after work I found about a 1/4 inch crack in the manifold gasket. The gasket that was used was the thick reusable one from the Cox bros. I know that the gasket failed due to the heat from the turbo and I figure that the gasket is not correct for a Turbo application. My question is what brand or type gasket can withstand this type of extream heat? Also note that I have no problem with underhood temps or overheating. Looks like I will be spending a day or two replacing the gasket. Let me know what you guys with the turbo motors think. Thanks, Brian |

It is very much worth your while to get the good gaskets for the manifolds-to-head and intake-to-exhaust junctions. |

Brian, make sure the manifols (both) are totally flat, and that one port is not lower then any others, or you will have problems, with any gasket. Ask me how I know ![]() |

Charlie, What gasket are you running on your car? I will double check the manifold surfaces once I pull it apart. Its no big deal because I had planned to do a radiator upgrade and a few other minor things. The smallest exhaust leak can be so damn annoying at idle. |

On my NA and nitrous motors, I am using the Cox Bros gasket. On my turbo motor I used a Stock aftermarket "composition" gasket, not the metal one. I don't remenber what brand. The Cox/Mr Gasket/etc gaskets were not avaliable at that time (20+ years ago). I did not have to worry about the exhaust to intake seal, as I welded the exhaust flapper in the "no heat" position. It was welded internally, so there was no leakage around the flapper. I was running a "draw thru" system and had a water heated adapter on the cab to turbo inlet. You are running a "blow thru" and in Pa, so I do reccommend manifold heat.
