Hi Folks! My name is Dave and I have a question: I just got a slant 6 that was setup for racing (3 dual sidedraft 45 webers and other toys), and I'm trying to make sense of the casting number. On the left (drivers) side of the block there are large numbers (about 1" tall) 2121474-3 and smaller numbers 7 31. I can't find a reference to this casting number, any thoughts? Thanks!! Dave |

There is no "198" block. The 198 and 225 use the same (RG) block. Interesting casting number you've got there. Have you got a digital camera? Can you show us a good, clear pic of the casting number you see? |

Interesting. It's definitely an early block (3 freeze plugs) but I'm curious: Is that plate-and-pipe arrangement where the water pump belongs your doing, or is that how the engine came to you? 2121xxx is a number that would've come up sequentially in the '60-'61 timeframe. Do you find any engine ID numbers stamped (not cast) into a boss aft of the water pump, or alongside the frontmost or rearmost cylinder? My initial guess is you've got a '60-'61 225 engine, but at the moment it's just a guess pending more info. |

Definately no numbers stamped. The waterpump plate is a cast item, obviously made for this application, no idea of the source (I got the motor as you see it). The bore is 3.48, the stroke is 3.20 or 182.6 cubes (exactly 3 liters). Must have been for a 3 liter racing class. Here's a few more pictures plus some of the head (appears to be a modified 64-6 head):

That is a bored and stroked 170. The distance from the top of the timing cover to the deck shows me it is a 170 block. The water pump plate suggests a external cooling pump. I am wondering if this motor was used in a 3 liter boat racing class. Did you get any exhaust manifols/headers with it. They could be another clue. I would also like to see a better pic of the pistons. Pop up pistons, head studs, other parts. did you check the cam specs, yet? Looks like a good find. |

Certainly interesting! The head casting number is standard (2206035, that is a '60-'66 head casting). The distributor looks to be a marine or industrial item. I agree with Charrlie_S, this started out as a 170 and not a 225. Where'd you find it? |

The engine came from the California High Desert, near Willow Springs. When I got it, I was told it was used for SCCA racing. I can find no numbers stamped on any of the bosses. The distributor is electronic, but heavily modified (aluminum breaker plate, still with DyChem on it). I did not measure the cam yet. The headers appear to be one-offs, not a mass produced set. Intake manifold is a modified Clifford piece. Pistons are pop-ups, not sure of CR. Here's some more pictures:
