I know you experts are out there waiting to laugh at us newbies, so here's one for you:
I've been experiencing some odd things in my 62 Valiant, push button auto tranny. After starting her up and driving her a few blocks we come to a stop and when taking off, there's nothing then it kicks in and runs fine. Only does this once, kinda think it's when she's a little cold or maybe not building up enough pressure. Any known causes?
The other thing that she does occassionally is when sitting a complete stop she'll leap ahead. No warning, no pressure on the gas pedal, just decides to move a little. My wife calls it "panthering". Ideas??
And the last odd thing is the shuttering in reverse. I can't tell if this is rear end or tranny related. She sometimes shutters when backing up. The shuttering feels like a strong shaking of something towards the rear of the car.
When I purchased her a year ago the owner tried to get me to take his other engine, tranny and rear end but I had no room at the Inn!

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Time for some transmission service! Fluid and filter change, bands and kickdown linkage adjusted, trans checked for external leaks and resealed as necessary. Your symptoms result from the trans starving for fluid or when the trans seals are crispy and leaking fluid internally. There's a fluid filter installed in the trans cooler line, clipped to the side of the engine block, near the starter motor. It's a black cylindrical canister. These exact filters are no longer made, though you might still be able to get one from Torqueflite Patty. See this thread. Changing to the '64-up pan and '64-'65 in-pan filter is a more cost-effective fix. The torque converter and transmission should be drained, the in-pan screen replaced with the '64-'65 style filter, the bands adjusted to spec, the new reusable trans pan gasket and later type pan installed, and the trans filled with fluid. Any quality brand of Dexron will be fine; I go a step further and use Chrysler Mopar ATF+4 (not ATF+3!) in mine. This will probably fix the problem, but if it does not, more extensive internal trans work (rebuild) will be required. Do get in touch with Torqueflite Patty before proceeding.
