hi all,

i am in the process of installing one of those "universal" windshield washer pumps. I want to find a momentary-on pushbutton switch to activate it and I am wondering what sort of contact-point current rating I should look for in the switch.

Do you think this switch would be acceptable for this?

Not sure... but you may find that the wiper switch on your car already has an unused set of terminals on the back to run a windshield washer. Take a look at the back of the switch.

If it does, it will save you hacking the dashboard to add a switch.

That's about what I have, works fine.......

I mounted under the dash above the kickpanel (below the washer switch on a 64) with an angle bracket so there wasn't any hacking of the dash or anything else..........

Hmm.. thanks for that.. feeling on the back of the switch, there does seem to be an unused terminal.

The switch itself is a four position switch.. pos 1 being off, 2 being off, 3 low speed, 4 hi speed.. always assumed 2 was for intermittent (this is actually another wish-list-- can i get intermittent in my car, did it used to be there? why else a dead position on a switch??)

I'm wondering how the electric washer was activated on a 68. turning the switch from the off position to the left would be my first guess but the switch doesn't operate like that. i then though to try depressing the knob and it does move in a bit as if to "suggest" that might be the activation but not enough for me to feel too sure..

I believe you simply pushed in on the switch knob.

Yes... push on the knob and see if it has a spring-loaded mechanism to it. I'll bet it does, and that is what activates your electric washer pump.

OK, I will check for that.. I think it does, there's not much movement in the action but it does push in slightly.

I am wondering what that second position on the switch is for, and if it is for "intermittent", how I might be able to get that to work ('cause currently it does nothing.. position 1 and 2 on the switch are both "off")

That it allows you to push it and it springs back is not certain evidence that it has the washer function. My 62 does the same but it lacks the necessary terminal and circuits to activate a pump. You'll need to pull the switch and examinie it for unused terminals and test it with an ohmmeter. If you find spare terminals be sure that they are not simply hard-strapped to the wiper circuit but actually access a separate switched circuit. It might well have a common ground buss on one side but the other side must be independent.
