Found a truck locally, but with an auto. So my curiosity is peaked.

What would it take to swap out a 904 (which I think /6 truck would have?) to a later model OD automatic? I'd probably swap the rear end too, going to like a 3.73, so as to have decent cruise rpm (another topic I'd guess).

I think the 500 is the larger of the two (based on the 727), but for a truck, would it be somewhat of a bolt in? Well, maybe with a different driveshaft?

The A-500 and A-518 trans were both made in a small block bolt pattern, only. You would need a engine to trans adapter for either trans, among other things.

Hm, that's a bummer to learn. Maybe the wife is right--better to wait to find a truck in manual. I suspect it would be a fair amount of work to convert.

I wonder if it would be easier to just add a transfer case to the end of the tranny, for those times when I need a lower gear for starting off? [Heavy load, that sort of thing.] Would just need the transfer case and the driveshaft from a similar equiped 4wd truck. Pull out the chain (or gears) for the 4wd part, and figure out some sort of mechanisim to move from 4lo to 4hi--could even be an electric solenoid. Probably wouldn't work, probably can't shift from 4lo to 4hi fast enough to make it worthwhile. But an interesting thought just the same.
