Post subject:  Valve seat/face angles

OK, just got my head back, but the machinist did not follow the exhaust valve "spec" which is (was)45 deg seat angle/43 deg valve face. He did 45/45. Does anyone see a problem with this increased surface to surface contact with new hardened seats, or is this a good thing?

This guy is pretty reputable in these parts (Bay Area) and did a nice job otherwise--just stubborn it seems.

Just rebuilt the carb, will probably get Parkinson's from all the fumes, BUT OOO Baby she's getting close! Thanks!

I would say that it probably will be ok. I have done a lot of valve jobs and I never believed in the 43*/45* style. Of course the guy who taught me was "old school" too. Dennis

I did valve jobs and such for 2 years (that is basically all I did in those two years) and the 45/45 is the standard. Off of the top of my head, I cannot think of anyone I know that does the 43/45 - on anything. The valve job will be fine- basically the 43/45 gives a smaller seating area and therefore more pressure and theoretically better sealing. But then again you can narrow the seat on the 45/45 valve job and accomplish the same thing with better flow. If the 45/45 seating surface gets to wide the pressure from the valvespring is spread a lot and sometimes does not seal as well.

Both methods work fine and either way I would not worry too much.

The thinking is that the minor "mis-match" helps the sealing and allow some clearance to "lap"-in the seats.

If you want to get the exhaust seats to have a little more contact area, remove the springs on the exhausts and "lap-in" the seats with some fine lapping compound.

Many racers will "hand-lap" the final seating surface by appling a small dab of compound onto the valve / seat and rubbing them together. This will give you a clear view of your seating surface and removes any minor imperfections on the seating surface.

Post subject:  Slant 6 Cant' live with 'em. . .

Thanks all, this is my second 64 Val although this is the deepest I have delved into the leaning tower of power. Thank you sincerely for your help thus far.

I've done a couple exhaust manifold changeouts, but they never get easier between seized bolts and broken studs.

Just suffered through a busted-off bolt on the blind threaded intake/exhaust mani-wich. Fixed it for now with new grade 8 bolts--hope they hold up for another 40 years! If not I see Dutra Duals in the near future should that stinkin' moose horn give me any more trouble.

Maybe get her fired up this week. I hope. . .
