Post subject: | Head seepage |
Noticed that my intake runners have some oil seepage at the head. Its not alot but, there's more at the front one than towords the rear one. I have also had some seepage on the other side. This has gone on since I had the truck (1982 225 auto). Tried different things but, heard that the head might need to be retorqued. Is this true and if so, do I need to put on a new head gasket? |

It just take some time and a valve cover gasket in order to retorque the head. Warm the engine and test the head bolts to see how tight they are. You will find that they will take a lot of force before the bolt "cracks loose and starts moving / gives you an accurate torque reading. Search the messages for more details. DD |

When you say crack loose, do you mean to back the bolt out a little then start to torque the bolt forward? |

Me... I just tighten them more. I used to go in the loosen direction to crack the bolt loose, then tighten but these days I have a better feel for how much overtorque it takes to get the bolt moving, so I just go tighter. DD |

I have no feel on a torque wrench. Do I torque to specs or more? |

That's exactly what my head was doing. The bolt torques were ok so I pulled the head and had some work done. Just waiting for the weather to clear to get back on it. |

Was the head warped or something else?

I pulled the head figuring I would replace the gasket. It was filthy from all the oil and 24 years of driving. So I got the head cleaned and resurfaced. I had them do a valve job with new valves. I didn't do a compression test before all this so I don't know if there's still a possibility of bad rings as has been suggested by some. I explained all this to my mechanic to see if he had any ideas. He thought the rings probably weren't the source of the oil. He suggested a PCV system clog. Unfortunately, I'm the only one who's seen the engine outside of pictures that are linked in my sig. |

Do I loosen all the bolts and then retorque from the center out or loosen and retorque one at a time from the center out? |

Do them one at a time... work from the center, out. DD |

It didn't stop the seepage so I guess need to get a new head gasket. What is recomended? Is Felpro or Rol good? |
