Can anybody help with a line on a "good" thermostat housing. I broke mine this weekend...what a moron!! Also, what is the proper order for installing the t-stat? block, gasket, t-stat, housing????
Thanks!!

The die-cast aluminum T-housings are easy to break if the thermostat slips out of the cover's counterbore and gets pinched between the cover and the head surface. A small amount of sealer or glue can help keep the 't-stat' in place during assembly.

Another option is to switch to the cast iron version of the cover. This does not prevent the problem I noted above but the cover will not crack... it will simply leak if the stat is not installed correctly

The nice factory aluminum one, 2121 524, can still be had from a dealer. I like these, but as Doc says, you have to be careful to get the "sandwich" right. The thermostat fits into the counterbore in the housing, then the gasket goes on, then the housing-stat-gasket assembly goes onto the cylinder head. If you prefer cast iron, NAPA Balkamp 605-1033, Stant 31300, or Four Seasons 84837. Whichever housing you choose, the best thermostat presently on the market is the Stant SuperState #45358.

Napa sells a t-stat gasket that is peel-n-stick. Drop stat into houseing and apply gasket sticky side down on to stat and houseing there by sticking both houseing and stat. Stat will not move during installation this way.
