Post subject:  What to do with black rubber bands- came with calipers

howdy

I got a set of used calipers (slider type) and they came with beat up black rubber bands. I thought they were there to hold the hardware together and I threw them away. Then when I bled the calipers to fit new pads one of them was mildly seized, so I ordered new ones (holy core charge batman!) on rockauto. While I was there I noticed the black rubber bands for sale (for only a couple bux) so I figured Id order them and figure out where they go later. Then the calipers came with another set mixed in with the hardware...

I can't find them in the manual (closest looks like piston seal?) and the only threads I could search up here had no answers.

I must need these?
Where do they go?
Thanks

they keep your hair out of your eyes, when wrenching. Are they o rings? What diameter?

My hair isn't that long! There is a pic in this thread:

The rubber bands are not o-rings- they have a square cross section. I didn't want to deform them, but they are stretchier than o-rings

Nobody knows what to do with these?

It seems they are an external part, as the used calipers came with them and were not disassembled.

In the picture linked the band are all most in the correct position in the pic. The bands get stretched around the metal plates right at the point the plate bends. Scroll down to slantvaliant's post and look closely and you will see the bands installed.
Personaly I have install and uninstalled the brake components so many times that the rubber band hve broken long ago and now I don't use them. They never made sence to me in the first place.

Post subject:  Thanks man!

I knew it would be something stupid, but I had no idea and didn't want to not use them and have all new brakes that squeak!

They won't squeak they will rattle, and its not the rubber bands. The outter pad slides around when hitting even the smallest bumps. You will need to bend the little tabs on the pad to make a snug fit.
