hello sages- been reading some great messages on the forum. keep up the good work. i have a search on for a movie- probably the best mopar movie made. it is a drama with dennis weaver(old sages will remember him as the crippled deputy chester good on the old gunsmoke program, the young bucks may remember him as the cop in the mccloud show)in any event he is on a western trip in alate 60s or early 70s 4dr valiant and being chased by a demonic oil tanker truck. eventually the slant 6 siezes and blows up. i cant remember thename ofthe movie. rarely it is shown on tv. does anybody know themovie title or if it is available. has some great driving scenes in it. it was referd to once in the old slant 6 news.thanks. callpaladin@aol.com

This is a cool movie and even better short story.
The movie is Steven Speilberg's first movie and one of Richard Matheson's best storys.
(He also wrote: The incredible Shrinking Man, Stir of Echos, What Dreams may come, I am Legend (The OmegaMan), Nightmare at 20,000 feet (Twilight Zone featuring William Shatner).

I also notice that they feature a Yellow duster in Edward Scissorhands too. Love them A-Bodies.

I found my copy in a WalMart el-cheapo VHS bin. The one you have to dig in to. Also got Christien (58 Plymouth) and a few other good ones there.

The engine (I think it was a 318) didn't blow up. Overheated like crazy, but didn't blow up. The car still ran until the very end of the movie.

And let's not forget the forgetable Howard Stearn in his bio movie with his beloved Valiant.........or was it a Dart.

For all-time car carnage and destruction during a 40 minute car chase, get the original "Gone in 60 Seconds" by H. B. Halicki. Cool big-block Mopar cop cars in that one too.

Whoever made that movie was obviously a Phord lover and Mopar hater. Only Mopars got chopped, stolen, crushed, and wrecked in the movie.

Actually Halicki owned a junkyard theovie houses scrapped all of their "old" cars into, so he decided to clean house and noticed he sure had a lot of openings for "police officers". In the follow up called "The Junkman" a hot chase wrecks Halicki's Cad, a mid 70's T-bird, and a Dodge Magnum XE.... To bad he was killed making Gone in 60 Seconds II.

I think Gone rates above Dirty Larry and Crazy Mary, but probably just below Vanishing Point....

That Halicki guy was killed making the next movie? What's the full story behind that? Where can I go on the internet to find out more about that?

It was part of a link for www.gonein60seconds.com a while back. It can also be found in the trivia section of Gone in Sixty Seconds(1974) on www.imdb.com (a most excellent site!)

Apparently, Halicki died doing the stunt for the final scene in the sequel (a big jump or something), and the movie was never edited and released.

I think he was supposed to drive under a falling water tower and the "pursuit" would wreck on the "barrier" created by the tower's remains. Coordination wasn't perfect and it went a little early on top of poor Toby's car. I hope I get to go doing something I enjoyed, at least I'd die happy.
