Long shot, but pull the fan belt. Could be a water pump or alternator.

I was passing someone on the way home yesterday, I was in 2nd gear, fairly high rpm and I hear a sound that is best described as a vibrating squeal. I go home and shut it off. I start the car up this morning, runs fine, no odd sounds until I give it some throttle, then I can hear the odd knock as I flutter the throttle. The knock is not always there, only when I give it some gas. As I increase the throttle, the knock turns into that vibrating squeal, hammering may better describe the vibrating, this noise is not all the time, just at a higher rpm. At idle the car sounds normal. I dont know what the problem is, but would appreciate the help. Thanks. |

Just a guess, but the noise sounds like spun rod bearing. |

The car is 72 dart, 225 engine, 904 trans. Could it be a loose torque converter? I dont see or feel a vibration. Motor needs to be pulled, huh? |

I would check the converter bolts before I pulled the motor. It's happened to me twice now.

I did pull the fan belt off. I was hoping that would be the problem. Nay. |

I have had flex plate bolts back out three times. Once on the 340 in my Barracuda and twice in my race car. Solid motor mounts tend to cause vibrations. All three times it sounded like a rod knock. I have not heard no squill or shrill noise. I doubt that the flexplate tabs have broke on the converter I tore a flex plate in two and the tabs and bolts were fine on the converter. Thanks for feedback, I will check the flexplate/torque converter. If it is a spun rod bearing, whats the best way to go? Replace all rod bearings? The whole bottom end? |

If it is sqealing you have already burnt the crank. If it is a low mileage short block I would roll the dice and put a crank kit in it. If it has miles, total rebuild is the way to go.

Well it is not a rod bearing, I pulled all of them. They all look brand new. I suppose its time to pull the main bearings? What is the chance they would spin? |
