Well since i got a ton of parts now, my father said i should look for this , i have a 78 volare with originally an auto, are the cranks in these machined for sticks?

bigblockdart.com go to the tech section and they have a good 4 speed swap section. The article talks about how you can get a newer ('95 and up or something) bearing and insert for an auto crank to take a manual input shaft, but that you might have to cut a little off the input shaft. Luckily I have some spare parts to mock up my setup before I go cutting!

thanks! had a feeling i would end up there.... how hard would it be to find a stick shift slant? don't see a whole lot of them and i don't want to tear this beast down just yet to do this. motor wise that is..

You can put a stock four or three speed stick shift pilot bearing in the rear of your auto crank shaft. There was no difference that I am aware of. Often they are already there, installed in the factory auto, apparently to make the crank universal in it's application. You will need a slant bell housing, and a slant flywheel. All the clutch stuff is available as repair parts. Go to Year one, and I think they have all the rebuild parts for the clutch linkeage there. The insert of the later pilot bearing is to get a 5 speed in your slant. That is what I did to put the Mustang five speed in mine, and that pilot bearing came from Keisler.

It is likely easier to find a four speed set up for a Volare or Aspen slant, and it will bolt right up to any slant. There might be a difference for pre-67 cranks. Someone else will have to address that. I know the autos have a different rear crank hub for 68 and up, but don;t k now if the stick shift pilot bearing is different from 67 to 68.

all of the late 70s cranks were counterbored for the bushing that Ive seen but not finish reamed. Ive had to shave the OD of the bushing to fit into cranks that were originally ahead of auto trannys, also, I have a 4 speed hump for that Aspen, something youll need.
