Post subject:  almost there! factory gauge questions...

hey guys, ive got my 67 dart gt running with an aftermarket ammeter, getting ready to wire everything back up, everything meaning my gauge cluster and the aftermarket ammeter and tach and maybe some wiring for possibly adding a temp and oil pressure gauge in the nearish future, it wasnt starting, and now when i put in this aftermarket ammeter, then it starts and runs, the ammeter looks like its working with the exception of its never on the + side but thats likely due to the alternator wrie through the firewall having a recently broken terminal, the aftermarket gauge has a + and a - sign, i know the black wire isnt ground, but i put it on the - terminal and the red one on the + terminal, is this right? like i said it seems to be functioning and its starting now, is the - + designation for people knowing where to put what color wire or what? i have a plan on how to wire that up so i dont have any exposed connections and its not stuffed back behind my gauges, also on my factory gauges then it has a little metal loop holding a plastic thing of some sort, this is on the back of the speedo housing, does this need to go somewere specific? what is its purpose? also, im rerouting the wiring from the ammeter, is there power coming from the other wires? ie. will i still have lights(that is after i replace them all after a couple years with just one bulb  ) behind my gauges? thanks alot!

Can you describe how the ammeter needle moves, say, after starting?
... or with the engine off and the lights on?
That would help verify that you simply have the polarity wrong.

Photos would help identify the "little metal loop holding a plastic thing "
