Hey Doc,

I'm done buttoning up the A-833-od tranny.
Mopar always said use Dexron ATF which I've heard wore the shafts out quickly in many 3 and 4 speed boxes. My grandfather always swore by 90 weight gear oil (that was in the 80's). I had heard a synthethic gear lube is the best, but one that is non-hypoid (someone else said the friction modifiers aren't good for the synchros).
Now in the 21st century, I've gone to 3 supply places and they say they don't make non-hypoid gear oil anymore (regular or synthetic).

What do you use? (Brandname, weight, etc.)

Thank you again (my Feather Duster thanks you!)-

I have always used the 90 wt. in the "street cars" and the ATF in the "race units".
I have heard good things about the synthetics so I will try some the next time I do a manual box.
(It is always nice to first check it with "cheap" oil, for leaks or problems, it all is OK, swap over to the good stuff)

I have always been burdened with this thicker is better mentality when it comes to oil.

I have 75W-140 Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube in my A833OD and the synchros do not like it (rear end is happy though). Down shifts to second are stiff and I have to be careful on down shifts to first or it will grind. I have had at least 1/2 dozen people tell me they have had the same problem with synthetic gear lube in these trannies. It seems to be more related to the frictional charactersitics than the weight.

I have been just too lazy to swap back to the recomended ATF. Maybe this note will be the motivation to crawl under the car this weekend.

FYI, I swapped the recomened 5W-30 to 20W-50 in the gear box of my 89 Shelby Daytona and I could not up or down shift to any gear without grinding. I immedately went back to 5W-30 and it has been trouble free for 160,000 miles.

I have been using Red Line MTL in the transmission in my Feather Duster for the last year and have had good results with it. Not quite as smooth as ATF but much better than 75W-90 synthetic. DP
