| Post subject: | Vapor Canister ? |
I noticed on my 81 D150 there are 2 canisters , on one of the canisters the small nipple is broken off. Do I need 2 , or can I just switch to one. I guess if i need both of them the junkyard is the best way to go. I also was thinking if there was something i could repair it with since it is broken flush (probably a stupid thought). Any answers will be appreciated |

H'mmm. Two cannisters, eh? Interesting. Do you have the FSM to determine whether this is an original setup or not? Where are the two cannisters located, exactly, and what exactly hooks up to each of them? |

they are both on the passenger side fender well . the bottom on has four hoses going into it . One goes to a small metal line ,I guess to fuel tank. The small one goes to the ported vacuum switch .The other two go to the carb . I know one does ,and I think the other does I got the carb and manifolds of at this time , but they are both larger hoses. Three of the hoses (the small hose ,and the top two other hoses are just tee'd of to the second canister Dave |

H'mmm. I suspect the "smaller one" isn't really a charcoal cannister at all. Ported vacuum switches are part of the EGR system, not part of the evaporative emissions system, while the charcoal cannister (of which there is usually only just one) is part of the evaporative emissions system. So, (again), do you have the factory service manual? Can you show us a photograph of both cannisters, and maybe a close-up view of the damage? |

Does the truck have dual tanks? Sometimes the mfg had to add evap canister "capacity" when a second tank was installed. The ported vac is used to prevent vapors from being drawn into the intake system at idle. |

Sorry my dsl went out last night. Both of the canisters are the same size . I was talking about the smaller hose that comes out from a little disk shape thing at the end of the canister that goes to the ported vacuum switch . Ill try to get a picture , but I need to get my wifes camera. I have a ,if Im correct , a 35 gal. tank |

35 Gal? Mine is somewhere around 17. Is it possible two tanks are daisy chained so you wouldn't have to throw a switch? |

I had an 82 (or maybe an 85, I've slept since then ) D150 that had a 35 gal tank. I could go 500 miles between fill-ups but it did hurt when it came time to fill it. |

I checked under the hood and it is a 30 gal tank . Yeah you'll have to take out a loan to fill it up |

Mine might have been 30 gal too, don't remember for sure. It's been close to 20 years since I had that truck. I just remember that I could head out from Denver and didn't stop for fuel until Salina, KS and that's a "fer piece." |

yep, that's why 2 canisters. If you look in the engine compartment, there should be a diagram, showing the hookup. Any Vapor canister with the correct hose connections will work, and if it is the same mounting setup, will make it easier. Check the junk yards. I don'd know of any aftermarket source, for them, and I know the dealer will not have them.

I finally got the picture [img=http://img465.imageshack.us/img465/3536/cimg0711gn7.th.jpg] I got one of the canisters and of the broken piece. I know why there are two canisters now , but are both necessary, and does anyone believe there is a way to repair the broken canister? I appreciate everyone that is replying to my post. Thank you so much for all of the help! |

Some small tubing (copper - hardware store or brass - hobby store) stuffed into the hole and then some JB weld or silicone glue (plain old black, not the ultra stuff) |
