Was it normal for Dusters to not have a middle seatbelt for the rear seat? Whenever my girlfriend and me take her son (he's 4, so he's still got some time in a booster seat) with us in my car I have to secure his car seat to one of the side positions, which I don't think is entirely legal. I'd like to install a middle belt (or maybe even a better way to secure the car seat) just so we can have him sitting in the middle of the car if some jackass decides to sign their death warrant by running into me.

They might've been removed, or they might've been shoved down behind the seat. There are four anchorage points for the rear lap belts: two on the left and two on the right. The left belt halves attach to the left anchorages. The right belt halves attach to the right anchorages. The middle belt attaches to the left and right inboard anchorages. Pull the rear seat cushion and see what you find. If the middle belt has gone missing, you can get a replacement from http://ssnake-oyl.com/ .

Yeah I had pulled the seat out and there was no belt, which was why I was curious.

Now for my next question: is there a better way to secure a carseat back there than with just the lap belt? A harness system or something perhaps?

a lapbelt is good, but it depends on whether its a forward-facing or rear-facing seat. I have setup in our 2 cars a tether to the top of the seat that attaches behind the seat. You could alter the package tray a little bit to create this same setup. That adds a measure of safety vs. simply the lapbelt.

Both of my Aspens (76+77) have a center belt in the front rather than in the back. The same goes for all three of my A-Bodys(two70Swingers+73Scamp); so I'm not sure if your center belt is 'missing'...
Seems odd though, considering that the decal in the door jamb of each calls for a max passenger load of 6

Try moving the center belt from the front to the back...

My 70 Valiant has center belts front and rear. One of the reasons I bought the car is because it can seat all six of us (myself the wife and 4 children).

Up in Canada, there's a law that all cars newer than 1988 have to have an upper child seat anchorage. They are available as universal add-ons at Canadian Tire, because they must be added to '88-up vehicles imported into Canada from the US and other countries. If you'd like to have an extra-secure infant seat setup in your car, picking up one or two such anchorage kits and installing them in your car would probably be a good way to go. Let me know if you'd like some assistance on that front.
