Post subject:  gas tank removal question

Does the filler neck pop out of the gas tank gasket when removing the tank, or does the neck have to come out with the tank? I'm a little stuck here.

Thanks,

John

depending on year of car--- the filler tube(s) all come out -- but the earlier years 60-63? have a large "O" ring around them that seats inside of the tank-- whereas-- later styles have a large gasket that the tube slides into(gasket fits tank opening).. in my experience the later gasket style is much easier to remove -- the early style seems to fit much tighter.. Have patience & it will come loose

Loosen the 3 screws that hold the top of the neck to the Q-panel but do not remove them. Remove all the screws that hold down the rubber "boot" gasket onto the trunk floor.
Dis-connect the sender wire and any fuel hose(s)
Push the tank off the filler neck. (The loosened and "floating" neck will allow you to drop the tank lower, in order to clear the spare tire "bump")

Thanks,
I have the later tank and I had sprayed silicone lubricant on the gasket and tube before I gave up yesterday. A good bit of twisting and pulling and it came out today. Now the search begins for the best price on a replacement.
