Requesting info or reference, I'm getting a bit frustrated trying to buy just a plain 9 1/4" disc. Seems everyone now wants to sell a "kit" with pressure plate & can assy included. In as much as I build my own I'd merely be buying pointless parts & a disc for over an ace, irritating to say the least. |

Yeah, I have seven NAPAs in 20 mile radius, none willing to part with disc only for 9". 10" is no sweat, likely due to usage in PUs & vans well into the '80s. I made a 10" set-up too but I'm trying to keep the rotating mass to a minimum and believe the 9" I made will manage so wish to stay with the Borg niner if I can. The four dealers within the circle were a hoot. Sometimes I wonder if the L.A. population density's really worth it any more. May have to look into aftermarket (maybe racing) possibilities, though I don't foresee much in that size. Might also have a lead on a "rebuilder" of antique clutch and brake parts, probably pricey. Just rather surprised at the dearth so far. Sandy, would you consider packing up a few if nothing else turns? |

Yeah, I looked online at a few stores and no one carries just the replacement 9.25" Disc. I would try your yellow pages and Find a good local Clutch Rebuilder And get it done locally. Greg |

Dick, Great to meet you in person at SF. The place you need to call is Valley Clutch in, Irwindale. They build clutches. They had every variant of Mopar clutch in there and could do custom units too. This has been 5 yrs, but they seemed like a huge operation. Very reasonable prices and they went in back and indulged my parts bin engineering ideas and showed me lots of parts. They sold me a 10" Mustang disc and NEW (not rebuilt) Mopar 10" pplate and a 65 Mustang TOB all separate. Great folks and hope they can help you out. Lou |

I seem to be coming to the same conclusion. The PITA is that if they're selling new ones with the pressure plates then SOMEONE's making'em somewhere. If I could afford a few hundred I guess it wouldn't be a problem, right? Howdy Lou, It was pleasant meeting you as well, and nice to see your car in person. Always enjoy good work and good workers. I'll be running shop errands today so I'll check out the Irwindale place on the way. Thanks, and wish me luck ....... If I wind up having to go with the 10" I'll devise a re-enforcement for the can's mount ears and post it. I don't much care for the way they stamped that one, definately some unguarded stress points there. They should've left some lip from the cavity edge to the inside of the ear, could've even back drafted the pressure plate rim for a tad more room if needed. Probably just my paranoia but then that IS the way you spell "engineering" isn't it? Hmmm, wonder if the triangular exhaust washers might help? Or at least that concept ........ |

Lous idea is the best. You could even get a 23 or 10 spline mopar centre in a Turbo T bird disc. I use a 9.25 turbo T bird disc in the Valaint (under stock pressure plate) They are a vast improvement over stock and cheap like NAPA. Of course my input shaft is 23 spline Ford 5 speed. The rotating mass difference between a 10" and 9.25 clutch is considerable. In my opinion the 9.25 system is fundamentally better designed for the slant than the 10". |

I've noticed that some late model ford rangers use a 9 1/4" 1"x23 spline disc. Don't know if this would work but might be an option. |

That Ranger disc is deceptivly close to the 9 1/4 Mopar disc. It wont actually work wihout a bunch of hand filing...leading to clutch chatter.. That Ranger disc is the poor cousin to my 23 spline turbo T bird disc. They interchange. The trans in my car is a cousin to the Ranger 4 cyl 5 speed. |

Well, Valley Clutch isn't in that building anymore. Their site says they are, but their phone's automated and only offers investment info, and the new business in that building sells office furniture. That whole area is mostly new businesses now, nearly didn't recognize it. Not having any luck with anything else here as yet either, but may be getting some from Canada for now courtesy of one of the members. Still looking into some more leads for here, for the long run. Ain't ready to give it up yet, I'm pretty hard headed when I get my back up. Likely the Hoosier in me .......... Going to put the Barn Job together with a used one for the show & tell at Bakersfield the 23rd, at least I finally got the arm turned around. Thanks for the offer Doc, it may come to that. |
