I just wanted to touch base with this knowledgeable bunch about an intake question. For the past couple of years I have been running a CAIN two barrel intake on my 225. Here is the question. Has anyone ever heard of a CAIN intake. From the way it is cast into the top of the intake I would say that CAIN is the manufacturer of this peice. I currently have a Holley 2300 series 500 CFM carb on it that bolts directly on. I will go on to add that 500 CFM is way to much for my nearly stock slant, but it seems to run well enough. Any input about the CAIN intake would be interesting to hear about. I'm in the process of deciding whether or not to run this on my slant build-up.

Thanks
Sean

How about a picture of the intake, I have never heard of one. I believe there are a couple of guys on here that have or have had a 500cfm two barrel on their slant. Yes, probably too much for a stock engine, what sort of build are you considering?

hello Sean,
Australian,I think you will find, and no longer around, taken over I think by Redline Industries.
this link will give you a clue:
http://www.hot-rod.com.au/links/manifolds.htm

there are plenty of mentions of Cain for our locally produced Holden(GM)
and Ford products, and I have seen a slant or 2 with Cain intakes myself.
made in Sydney by the looks of it.

regards,Rod :D

Thanks for the quick response. I just emailed John Cain industries to see if they had anymore information.

Thanks
Sean

My hopes for the engine build are as follows.
1970 225 block bored to .06-.08 overbore
2.2 KB hypereutectic pistons with the dish for the turbo
198 connecting rods which I'm currently looking for (may have to go with custom made)
I have a full ported head that has .100 shaved off with large valves that I bought from Clifford
Clifford split headers into an X-pipe 2.25 pipe into 40 series flowmasters and stock A-body 340 tips
Clifford cam grind as follows
268 mechanical
lift: 447/447
duration.268/.268
balance rotating assembly
Electromotive fuel injection (when money is available)
Demon 2 barrel 350CFM maybe a 500 CFM if found necessary
CAIN intake
Double roller timing chain from Clifford
I'm working on an electric water pump idea and looking to run an electric
fan
I have crunch the numbers and the combination of rods, pistons, and shaved head should yield 10.7:1 compression ratio
This is what I figure on paper real world will be different as I haven't CCed anything yet. I really wanted to run on a mix of 91 octane and race fuel
This is going in front of an 833 4-speed over drive and in time I intend to install a gear vendors overdrive unit. With this combination I will yield a .37 in fourth overdrive.
I'm currently running an 8 3/4 with 4.10 gears and a Dana clutch type sure-grip. The 4.30 unit is on the shelf just in case. If that doesn’t suffice the 5.55's could go in.

All this is in my 1974 Swinger that I have converted from an automatic to manual the only other modifications as of right now include Brembo calipers on 11.75 rotors on the front and a Kiesler hydraulic slave for the clutch.

Talk about a windy posting. I just didn't want to miss anything, though I'm sure I have.

I would highly recommend running a bigger cam with that comp ratio. Something like 0.500" lift and 240 @0.050" duration. It should idle pretty well with 10.7:1.

A hly 500 2bbl is a great carb for the Slant. Many people have run 14s (incl me) and a few even 13s with that carb.

I forgot to mention that I plan on mostly street driving, and once in a while a trip to the track should suffice. Any thoughts on this would be welcome.

Thanks
Sean

I would still recommend a bigger cam than the one you listed. You may also have higher than 10.7:1 with 0.1" off the head and the 198/2.2 combo.

Personally, I design my motors to run on pump premium (91-93 oct), which simplifies driving considerably. I would not go below 230 @ 0.050" with 10.7:1, although it can be done. The 225 Slant idles quite well with big cams.

This is good to know. The larger cam doesn't bother me one bit, in fact I rather enjoy hearing I can gain some more performance and still run it on the street. If it is a little more radical than I expected I wouldn't mind. I also think that the fuel injection will help me in this area, but the 500 CFM Demon is probably what I will have to run for a little while. How about roller rockers? Will I see a big advantage in running these?

It also looks like I may have a new cam and lifters for sale in the near future, and what better place than this to offer them up.

The 500 2bbl should work very well for you. You will not see a big performance gain with the roller rockers on a hipo engine. The 225 does not apparently like lots of lift, but can take plenty of duration. You might see 3-8 HP, which may not warrant the $500+ pricetag. The stockers are very robust.

Erson grinds custom cams for the Slant, and just did a run recently. Several other places too. I recommend using about 4-8 deg MORE intake duration than exh duration.

I'll have to check out the Erson cam. Looks like I'll save a buck and run the stock rocker arms and spend that money in more important areas. Looks like connecting rods are going to be around $1200 for custom made and it is looking like that is the route I'm going to take as I can't seem to find a set of 198's. Last time I checked Cox Bros had the rods that I want. The long rod build seemed like a pretty good one to me. If I can get the funds rounded up before the end of the summer I should have a pretty stout motor ready to go.

I have tried the 1.6 roller rockers against the stockers on the same day at the track. There was no performance difference between them. I have a 300*/.558" cam though.
