I did a search on seatbelts and found no posts, so here it goes: I've been driving my '68 Dart 4-door sedan daily for a couple years with only the lapbelts (very scary for first time passengers)... Does anybody here have experience installing racing-style harnesses on a front bench seat (not split)? If so, what's the best way? Which kind or harness is best? Are Y-style harnesses bad on a street car? Any pictures would be very helpful. Thanks in advance. pwd22@drexel.edu |

This winter I was thinking about putting a set of belts in my Duster, so I asked the Tech guy for RT66 about the proper way to install them. The answer that I got was that since I don't have a rollbar to anchor the shoulder belts to, was to not put them in. The reason I was given is that if the shoulder belts are anchored to the floor, they can cause a compression of the spine if the car rolls over and you hang in the belts any time at all. They did show me a drawing of a "T" bracket that mounts to the floor behind the driver's seat. Using the bracket made the installation safer, but it really looked like a pain in the butt. I'm installing power bucket seats from a '97 Sebring convertible in my '64 Valiant convertible. The Sebring seats have shoulder belts integrated into the headrest. The outer belt anchor uses the stock Valiant location. It's not a cheap installation, but it does solve the problem of shoulder belts. It's a fairly complex adaptation since you must install and integrate the wiring from the Sebring seat control module and power seats into the Valiant wiring. I also had to build mounting brackets and reinforce the floor. Since the seats take roughly 1/2 the g-forces in an accident, the stock floor pan is not sturdy enough to anchor the seats without reinforcement. I expect to have the interior installed within the next couple of weeks and will send photos to anyone interested. |
