Hi all,

I checked NAPA and Star Auto today, and looked everywhere I could think of on the internet. Nobody seems to carry the aftermarket/repair versions of the unleaded fuel restrictors for the fuel filler tube. Does anybody have a source for these? I am dropping the tank to fix my botched return line for the fuel injection, and I thought I would fix the gas regurgitation issue while I am at it.

If you don't need the flap part, I think you could just make one.......

(the ones I've seen look like they're just hammered into the inlet (which I can't find at the moment))

Y'know, these restrictors used to be easily available as repair parts, but for some strange reason, in the last few years they've absolutely dried right up and disappeared! I don't understand it, because more and more places are getting emission tests that include fuel filler restrictor inspection. You may want to send an e-mail to jverban@hotmail.com in Australia and see if he can furnish a suitable unleaded restrictor for whatever year and model vehicle you're working with. Explain to him you know it isn't legally required for your vehicle, but you want to install it anyhow.

I found some sort CARB emission part hotline, so I will try calling them tomorrow, and see if they have a source.

If it works out, I will let everybody know.

Okay, I believe the regurgation problem is twofold.

1. The lack of something to prevent the splashback
2. The shallow angle of the filler neck causes the tip of the nozzle to not be much lower than the outlet so that by the time the nozzle clicks off, the fuel is just about at the same level as the outside of the filler neck.

1 restrictor will help if the hole is at the top of the filler neck, and the lower portion is sealed. You then have to hold the nozzle just right so that the outlet is lower than your inlet hole and you may have a chance to avoid the splashback.

But you still won't be able to use the 'auto' feature of the nozzle because with the nozzle hanging there it's outet is too high up.

So I think you need 2 restrictors. The outside one with the hole high (and bottom sealed) and an inside one (an inch or two deeper into the neck) with the hole low. This will keep the end of the nozzle lower than the outlet of the fuel inlet and the auto off feature should work fine.

(and you get a side benefit of the 'auto' fueling feature working)

Technically you don't need one, so you word the question something like...

"I want to prevent spilled fuel on an old vehicle that doesn't have a restrictor.........."

I called these guys, and they do carry the restrictors. HOWEVER, the smallest they have is 1.75 inches in diameter. With the early A body filler neck, especially, the rolled in flange at the front, I am sure that this is not going to work.

I am going to have to come up with plan B.

I'm not. In order to install the restrictor, you would remove the filler pipe and install the restrictor plate from the tank end, pushing it up the pipe until it comes within some reasonable distance (inch or so) of the quarter panel end of the pipe. And the pipe is larger than 1.75" diameter.

I isn't there some sort of baffle or crimp in the lower end of an A-body fill pipe? I seem to remember that but I could be thinking of something else.

You need something that slips thru the locking tab slot,

then can be welded in so it doesn't move....

all without removing the tank (or the gas)

You drill a hole in it, then slip it sideways thru the locking tap slot, rotate into place....

I looked down the fill tube, and there's a slight restriction and some reinforcement where the tank vent is attached to the fill tube.

So taking the fill tube out and trying to slide something up from the bottom isn't going to work.... :cry:
