I am going to drop the pan on my 225 because the gasket leaks, gonna change the oil pump and strainer while in there. the question. Just how hard is it to change the piston rings from the bottom???

With the crank in the motor it would be impossible. With the crank out it would not be easy. I have seen it done, but it is real easy to break a ring.

Besides, it would do little good to replace rings without honing the cylinders at least, and that is illogical to do from the bottom.

I know it doesn't sound like it, but for what you want to do pulling the motor is the easiest thing to do. :D

While it is easy to change out the crank without removing the head or rods/pistons....you do have to remove the trans to do it.

Its just easier to re ring with the motor out.

I have done rings and bearings with the motor in the car but the head does have to be removed; no way around that.

Even if possible you still need to remove the ridge at the top of the bore. The new top rings would hit that and be ruined in no time.

I have done a few in car ring and valve jobs. Unless there is some special reason to do it that way, it is so much less work to just pull the whole engine and do it right. Then you can clean it right and reseal everything as well. It would be almost impossible to actually keep everything clean working under the car. It kills your back working in car on a big job like that too.
