Post subject: | Starter connection Mystery |
I finally got the Valiant's new headlights installed last night. What an incredible difference the Cibie headlamps make! I was putting the battery cable back to the positive side, and noticed movement at the starter end. I've got a mini-starter on the car. both connections were extremely loose. Floppy loose. I'm surprised I wasn't having starting issues. I'm thinking the engine is torquing over and tugging at them. The mounts are in acceptable shape, but of late it's felt like I'm getting more engine movement Under hard acceleration than I used to. This weekend I'll go ahead and replace the engine and transmission mounts. Just seems a bit odd. I wonder if one of my fine neighbors was going for a five finger discount and got spooked...? I had that sudden hood closing issue.... Hmmm. Paranoia... CJ |

The world is a dark and sinister place! Nah. must be from not having much strain relief to the cables. I swapped to a smaller battery that could be clamped down with more than gravity. The cable to the starter is just shy of long enough. Course I wouldn't put it past Paul, he's still trying to get that machine of his put back together! Hold it! I already gave you a starter man! When are you going to call in the cavalry to put your car back on the road Sixpar? I'm in! (Course you've seen my car....) CJ |

Glad you like the Cibié lamps. Remind me sometime and I'll tell you a funny story about them (well, funny if you consider high holy geekfests amusing). Be sure you aim them correctly. As for your starter question, you may want to change the terminals so that they're more compatible with the direction your cables tend to pull when the engine shifts on its mounts under normal acceleration. See this post et seq. |

I've got the pickup adapter. I don't see anything that would work better. The biggest issue is cable length. Putting longer cables on would solve most of the issue. As soon as I can get a helper out there, I'll power brake a bit and see how tight those cables are actually getting. I really stood on it trying to spit gravel out of the tires at Medford. I'll bet the mounts have traveled the rest of the way to Valhalla. Your website was the first place I went before starting on the project Dan! Good stuff. Did I mention those lights are awesome! CJ |

today I finished work and headed toward my doctor's appointment... I got to the clinic's parking lot and noticed a puddle of oil under the car when I got out... I popped the hood and found my fuel pump bolts had been loosened about a 1/4 of and inch....(funny thing is, I loc tited those guys 49,500 miles ago, and the bolt heads oddly weren't covered in road grime, like the rest of the pump....) New gasket and 3 quarts of oil and things are back in business...but still, your neighbor is getting around.... -D.Idiot |

If I catch him I'll send him back to your place to tighten those bolts back up! CJ |
