my sister's 1987 GMC Suburban quit on Friday night. She called me to help her, and the vehicle i had with me was my van. Surprised me when my full sized Dodge van with a 3.7 slant six moved that full sized SUV, despite the fact that the van was out sized and out weighed. Pushed it from one end of town to the other (about 20 ish blocks). Started getting a little hot (working hard, no fresh air into the rad because the Suburban was blocking the front) but did really well. Didn't realize that little engine had that kind of power. |

That little engine is a torque monster; stump puller. They are known for that even in stock form. |

When I was in high school a friend had a D-600(?) 4 speed, 2 speed rear 16ft. flatbed truck. It wasn't fast but would pull a load! |

The poster is indeed from a part of Western Canada where that would be tolerated. Northern Alberta is as close to the Wild West as still exists. Alberta has a right of centre government that takes a Laissez Faire (Lazy Fair?) attitude toward vehicles doing business (read Oil field service truck or log truck ). This attitude filters down to the passenger car level. On a recent road trip with 40 ft poles on an 18ft truck (an illegal load without the permit I didn t have), in the same area, I averaged 75 mph and passed a cop on a downhill grade. I was one of the slower service trucks. Average speed on Highway 2 between Edmonton and Calgary is 130 km/hr ( 80mph) ....speed limit is 110km/hr (65mph) Alberta has by far the most vibrant economy in the western world. They had a budget surplus of 7 billion dollars last year...in a province with 3 million people. It has been about 2 years since my son has done a job in Alberta without being offered a job on the spot. (hes 22). Workers at Tim Hortons (Canadian coffee shop icon) in Fort McMurray get $22/hr. The basic rule is: Dont Screw Up! |

More like $20.60 US. Alberta rules man, gotta love it. With that surplus everyone got $400 ($375 US) surplus checks from the government. I wasn't 18 at the time so my parents stole mine but i'm for sure getting one this year, assuming our new premier, Ed Stelmach, doesn't royally screw up. -Allen |

The Canadian $ has gained over 10% in value against the US$ since March. The dollars are near enough to parity that I call em even. |

If I'm not mistaken, Canada is something like 2nd or 3rd highest supplier of oil to the US and a large percentage of that comes from Alberta. In fact they might be #1, I just don't remember for sure. That's where that huge surplus is coming from. I hope you're investing it wisely for the inevitable day when it dries up. |

As long as you don't go past a Tim Horton's (24 hr. doughnut and coffee shop) or do anything on the route between Tim Horton's and the police station during coffee/meal times, you can get away with pretty well anything in Alberta. When we see police, fire, and ambulance all racing Code 3 (lights and sirens), we know what it means: last one there has to pay for the coffee. |

My '66 Clark Cortez came with an industrial slant six from the factory. It weighs more than 5 tons unloaded and about 6 tons with fuel, water and passengers. I've had it up to 85mph on flat freeway with no problem; on a steep grade, I'm down to about 35-45 mph. This was on an original motor with 88k miles in dire need of a rebuild. Of course it can push a little ol' SUV! I've finally begun my rebuild, so I'm anxious to see how she'll perform then. -Moose |
