Post subject:  Tuning Help

My pa and I having been tuning my slant six for a little why now and ran into a problem. I've been homing on about 200 degrees, and am not running a thermo cause it used to really screw up my temp and run it over. Next, we have a slight tick at exactly 2100rpm on the tach. I milled .1 off the head and so the cr is whatever that relates too, I run premium to make up for that. We installed an HEI(8 pin) igintion system. So any fixes to the overheating and the tick are my problems. Thanks, ahead of time.

You need to run a thermostat, preferably a 180. If your engine is overheating, then it is because something's wrong. Crudded-up block, crudded-up radiator, radiator tube/fin separation, improper fan or fan installed backwards, lower hose collapsing...does this overheating happen at low vehicle speeds or high vehicle speeds, or sitting idling in the driveway?

What kind of "tick"?

I know 4-pin, 5-pin, and 7-pin HEI systems. What did you put in?

it's a 7pin with a ground I guess? The tick is just that a tick at 2100 rpm where the tach ticks back and forth at 2100, kinda like a miss is how I would describe it.

The overheating I have no idea, the radiator is brand new. The fan blade is a possibilty along with the head being full of rust. however, I did have the head hot tanked and media blasted during build up. It wants to sit about 190 degrees without a thermo and worked it's way up during tuning to 200, is that normal for no thermo, what is my max temp than? Thanks

190, or even 200 is not at all a problem. With a pressurized cooling system you can go to 225 or 230 and have no problem. It's normal on a warm day, for the temp to go up a bit while idling but what you're describing is far from overheating.

I think your old thermostat was defective. It should behave for you with a 180 in it.
