well the assembly of the engine is finally approaching. I soaked all the parts in muriatic acid to get all the rust and crap off of them and it worked likea charm, HOWEVER..... there was an engine piece that was aluminum and I was not aware. I now know that aluminum and muriatic acid (30% concentration HCL) dont mix well at all. the reaction was RAPID oxidation (it basically boiled). THe part is destoyed (but every nut, bolt, and washer is as good as new). I am having a hard part determining what it is from reading my manual since I am not seeing any pictures of it. It was aluminum and gray in color. Bolted somewhere to the OUTSIDE of the engine, and I think it was near the timing cover, but I cant be certain as the righting and stamping on the piece is COMPLETELY obliterated and the piece is only a mere shadow of its former self. ANy ideas or where in the Factory Dodge manual from 1966 to check would be appreciated. 225 dodge dart, slant six. from 1966 Dart 270. I know this is a weird post. Caesar |

Was it kind of a horse shoe shape? Rear seal retainer maybe? Offhand, that and the water pump are the only aluminum i can think of on a Slant. ![]() |

The factory die cast oil pump is another likely suspect, also the fuel pump body, if that was left on the block. Your are changing the cam bearings, right? DD |

it had half circle cut out of the top and the bottom was a plate that resembled a horseshoe. Rear seal retainer? i will check it out online and see if I can find any pictures. Caesar |

At the very least, a picture of the now destroyed part might help. How many bolts held it on? |

*********************************************************and what's the style of bolt heads that held it on? (If I'm not mistaken, the seal retainers used a twelve-point head.) Roger |
