1. How much advance should I have at 3000 RPM? I've got it advanced to 15 degrees at idle. The propane I'm running allows for that much.

2. How do I get to the correct amount of advance? I am running ported vacuum. The truck seldom sees more than 3000 RPM.

3. Would 20 degrees initial advance be too much? It doesn't seem to have any problem with knocking.

Thanks very much,

Joe

When it comes to initial spark advance, there is a point where the idle starts to get choppy and RPMs don't increase much with more initial advance. (the idle quality just gets worst)

Do some testing and find that point. As you give it more initial advance and the idle speed increases, turn the idle speed down so you can better hear and feel when the quality of the idle starts to degrade.

Once I find that point, (usually it's around 15 degrees on a stock, gas powered SL6) I subtract 5 degrees, set the initial timing there and drive the car for a few days, listening for pinging and hot start problems. I will continue to adjust the initial timing setting until I like it, then recurve the distributor to get the total high RPM mechanical advance I need with that initial setting.

Thanks. I know there's been a lot of talk about re-curving--where can I get different springs, etc?

Post subject:  New factory distributor springs

There in lies the problem. I am at the same place as you. Where do you get new factory distributor springs for recurving the slant six?????

I have searched high and low, every dealer, auto-parts store, online catalog, etc. No one has them!

I need one step lighter than the stock spring with the large loop. I have bought several more used distributors, but none have the spring I need.

your camshaft timing affects how much advance you can use right?

Post subject:  Recurve springs

Yes, I have my cam advanced 4 degrees. I do not get any pinging at 43 degrees total. I have the basic 30 degrees with 13 degrees vacuum advance on top at 2000 rpm. The problem lies in that to get 30 degrees I have to run 20 degrees initial because I can only get 10 degrees mechanical. I want to reverse that to 10 degrees initial with 20 degrees mechanical. That is why I want a lighter looped end spring on the mechanical advance. It will not advance beyond 10 degrees at 2000 rpm.

Where can I find a new one step lighter, than the stock heavy looped end spring? All auto part stores, Year One, dealers, etc. say that they are not available? It seems many folks on this site are at this point and need to recurve their distributors. Why aren't MOPAR distributor springs available?
Who knows of a source?

After reading your article it looks like the answer is NO! Since you had make some springs.

New MOPAR Distributor springs are not sold any longer and we have to make our own springs, correct?
