What year and model is your car? Is this carburetor of yours really[]i] new, or is it a "remanufactured" unit from the parts store? How many miles on the engine, and what other tune-up and underhood work has been done recently?

After rebuilding my motor I was dissapointed in it's sluggish performance. An 80 year old guy at a carb shop showed me how to fix that problem.
He gave me some different thickness gaskets to put under the power valve plunger. This allowed me to tune how much it kicks in. The rebuild kit gaskets I purchased from NAPA were too thick so the plunger was not touching the power valve arm. He also gave me a new economiser gasket with a larger hole punched out for the accelerator pump shot. I also re-bent the accelerator pump linkage to take out all the slop.

Basically I changed two things, the accelerator pump shot and the power valve.

All I can say is wow! That woke up my car. It will smoke both wheels in a heart beat!
Kind of unusual for a 2.76 Positraction rear end.
It sure doesn't act like a slug any longer!

I am not sure where the discussions of 4bbl carburetors and power valve gaskets are coming from, for they're probably not applicable to this problem you're having. I am going to assume your carburetor is really a brand new one (not a rebuilt) and that it is a stock-type 1bbl unit. The first thing to do is remove the air cleaner lid with the engine off. Open the choke fully, then operate the throttle linkage by hand while looking down into the carburetor. You should see a solid stream of fuel get squirted strongly into the middle of the carb throat, each and every time you open the throttle. If the stream is weak and piddly, or if it doesn't exist at all, there's something the matter with your carburetor's accelerator pump.

If you do see the accelerator pump shot when you open the throttle, the next thing to check is the distributor vacuum advance. Apply vacuum to the vacuum advance hose and make sure it holds vacuum and you can't suck air. If it doesn't hold vacuum, you need a new vacuum advance and/or hose.
