I asked a question on this forum earlier about the location of reverse on a hurst shifter, for a 4-speed (833) conversion in my 67 a-body. I got the answer that reverse is forward to the left. I still can't get it to shift into reverse. Do I need to push down first? Ideas anyone?

If your clutch adjustment is a tad tight it will make it virtually impossible to get it into reverse. Even if it will go into 1st gear easily.

Is your linkage correct? Properly lubricated?
To check if your linkage is correct, put a 1/4 rod into the hole at the base of the shifter in th eneutral position and see if your shift rods are relaxed at this point. No stress on the rods at all. The reverse rod only moves when you put it in and out of reverse.

Look for the linkage alignment pilot hole as already suggested and adjust the rods so the pilot passes thru all the levers.

Note: The reverse gate on the Hurst shifter has a strong spring to keep you from going into reverse unintentionally, you need to push hard to the left to overcome the spring force.

I have had shifters where the pilot hole did not give me the best gate positioning so one trick is to remove the reverse rod from the shifter lever eye, then push the stick hard left while you move the stick up & down. (between 1st & 2nd) You should find the reverse gate when doing that.

Once you are in the reverse gate, move the stick so the reverse gate is in side to side alignment with the middle of the "H" pattern. (cross-over) You can feel this in the shifter as you move the stick around. Some drivers (like me) actually position the reverse gate a little high, slightly up into the 1st gear path so the reverse gate is not directly in line with the center "cross-over" of the "H". Doing this keeps you from getting hung-up in the reverse gate when doing a fast downshift into 2nd gear.

Once you find the place where you can easily move in and out of the reverse gate, go under the car and adjust the reverse linkage rod so it fits into the lever's eye, without moving the lever on the shifter box. If the lever moves, even a little, it moves the gate opening and you have to go through the alignment check again.

Ok, I feel like this will give me a good starting point. The crossmember was in contact with the reverse linkage and I had to coax it out of the way. Also the clutch linkage is definitely adjusted out too far, given the new clutch.
