When I went to get my new (used) tranny yesterday, it came with a slant six motor still attached. The feller who sold it to me said it came out of a running 70 Dart, and I believe him. As I turned it over with a pull handle yesterday to get to the flexplate bolts and remove the tranny from it, it seemed to have good, distinct compression strokes. This engine has the old style head with spark plug tubes, and a points type distributor. First, can this distributor be easily changed over from points to electronic ignition? Does Pertronix make a kit to do that, or should I consider the HEI mod, or what? Davey |

Best bet would probably be to go with the hei mod. Either ways you can go way beyond the capability of points ignition. All you'd need for mopar electronic would be an electronic distributor, mopar spark box,and you could rob the electronic igntion wiring harness from a 73 up mopar. Mopar performance sells the harness IIRC for about $30 new. Also pertronix makes the conversion to do this as well. They make an ignitor and an ignitor 2 for more performance. This is probably the easiest as you know because you can use your factory points distributor. Just be sure your distributor is good and if happen to need another watch out for poor quality remans from the parts store. The last one I got had a warped shaft! Good luck with your project! |

Is it a 198 or a 225 engine? Are you considering swapping the whole engine and trans assembly into your truck? |

Dan, the engine I got yesterday is a 225 as far as I know. I actually thought the 198 had been discontinued by 1970, but if not it may be a 198 for all I know. The fellow I bought it from said 225, so that's what I went by. Either way, I am only trading the tranny into my truck right now, since the engine in the truck runs great and holds 52psi oil pressure at anything over idle, even stinkin hot. Davey |

The 198 was introduced in 1970, replacing the previous base-model engine (the 170). The 198 and 225 use the same block and all other parts except crankshaft and connecting rods. Different carburetors were also used. 225s are much more common than 198s. Sounds like your truck's engine is healthy. |
