I had the sending unit replaced in my 1974 Dart. I dont know what they used but it cant be right. It drops to half after using only 2 gallons, I'm sure my tank is bigger than 4 gallons. Is the sending unit adjustable, or did they put the wrong one in?

Probably a problem with the replacement sender. Can you figure out what they put in?

Yes, on the new ones you have to bend/tweak the arm and check the 'sweep'... it will do what you say if they just 'plugged it in'... (when I installed the one in the Beater Valiant I had to pull it for two reasons : 1- it would register the top 6 gallons in the tank and be 'E' when it hit the 10 gallon mark, 2- the sock wasn't close enough to the bottom of the tank and it would go dry at about 4 gallons in the tank.... a pair of pliers and a little help from mr. tubing bender fixed that)

next question, I havent looked yet but can I get the sending unit out without dropping the tank? Is there an access port in the trunk maybe?

No access port in the trunk, but you should be able to get to it fairly easily from underneath, it is located on the front of the tank if I remember correctly.

You will have to run it till the tank is less than half full (unless you have been schooled in the fine art of siphoning). The sending unit is mounted to the front of the tank. Using a hammer and something non-sparking, like a brass drift (punch) or wooden dowel rod, tap the locking ring just a bit and it will release the sending unit. I assume the repairman used a new rubber seal, so it should not be stuck to the tank. Keep it intact for re-installation. You also need to disconnect the plug-on wire from the terminal, the short section of rubber fuel line, as well as the thin, flat grounding strap that bridges across the rubber section.

Then you're home free,
Jerry

When you get it out, this may be of some help:

http://www.vernco.com/sparks/id697.htm

About 3/4 down the page he talks about calibrating the gauge/sender. It’s for a different vehicle but the principal is the same.
