Post subject:  blinker switch problems

Out of the blue, I have come upon some problems with my Barracuda turn signals...well just when I click it to the left really. I can hold the lever down(not far enough to click) and the blinker works just fine.If I click it, then it blinks a couple times real fast, and LOUD( the amp guage pegs at discharge) them pop goes the 20 amp fuse. I took my column apart today, thinking it was a grounding issue, because at one time I could see a spark at the base of the column where it meets the firewall.I replaced the rubber seal around the collumn, and as I put things back on 1 by 1, when I got the wiring plugged in, and the column hanging by the bracket, I tested the switch, and I could actually see a arch(spark) when I pushed the arm down repeatedly.
So......anyone have a clue? I know some of the harness wires are flattened, butnothing is pinched, and I can move the wires freely. If I have to get a new switch, can I get a new one? or does anyone know where to look for one?
All help appreciated.

Dead short in the turn signal switch. New switch is available as Shee-Mar number SM-106. Their website is garbage; our cars aren't even listed, but they do make the switch (they just don't pay attention to their website). Click the "Contact Us" link and just call them on the phone to order an SM-106 (or ask where to buy locally to you).

OK, so I got home from work a little early, and talked myself into replacing all the wires on the switch-Well, I pulled the 3 screws in the retainer, and slid the switch off the top of the shaft, and was looking at it from the side.It looked like one of the crimped connections on the pink/  white-bottom left side had been bent back, and was toiching the coller of the steering collumn! So I repressed them flat, used electrical cleaner, and the slid a piece of black tape over them. I put it all back together , and WOO-HOO!!! it worked!! so I dont have to spend the $56 plus shipping!! I am a happy man.....and didnt even have to solder and shrink tube all the wires!

Good fixing! You may want to get that new switch in anyhow and stash it away...

Crap. Kaleco doesn't carry muffler flush.

Dan,

Thanks for the tip. Hopefully Shee-Mar has one of those babies still on the shelf later this morning when I call.
