 Post subject: carter bbd performance
PostPosted: Sun Jul 15, 2001 10:35 pm
I have a 76 225, w/286 dur. .440 lift comp mech., .060 milled off heads, gasket match w/ bowls opened, tri-y Clifford header, Mopar m-1 super six manifold (gasket matched), and a re-man carter bbd (for a 71 satellite 318 w/ac)????????

My buddy who is very good with carbs found a few machining flaws in the carb and "dazzled" it with jewelers drill bits. The car runs tremendous over stock and I still have a little massaging left to do such as MSD ignition.

BUT BEFORE I DO I WANT TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANYONE WHO KNOWS MORE ABOUT FINE TUNING THAT OLD CARB THAT IS WORKING WAY BETTER THAN I EXPECTED FOR 1/2 THE $$$ OF OTHER RECOMMEND SETUPS. THE BBD IS VERY PRIMITIVE BUT THERE IS ALOT MORE TO IT THAN MEETS THE EYE. MY BEST TIME SO FAR IS A 15.62 BUT I WANT MORE BUT AT THE SAME TIME LOVE THE LOOK OF THAT OLD CARB WITH THAT OLD SLANT AND WOULD APPRECIATE ANY KNOWLEDGE OF THOSE NUMEROUS LITTLE CARBS EVERYONE MAKES FUN OF.

I run a similar combination with my engine which is a .060" over 225 with .090" milled from the head with stock valves and bowl porting and gasket matching.(You did gasket match your intake didn't you. Mine was over 1/8" off in most ports.) I have run a best time of 15.80 with a BBD on mine. The next step would be to remove the choke plate and shaft and then mill down the throttle shaft and screw heads.(Carefully) This will help to get the CFM's up. Once you have done that there is no more you can do unless you re-design the venturi cluster. Unless you are good at casting and machining aluminum I wouldn't recommend that step. The next step is a bigger 2bbl carb. I currently run a holley 2bbl which came stock on 360, 400 and 440 mopars. Stock this carb flows about 385 CFM which compares with about 285 for you BBD. Plus this carb can easily be modified for performance. I can bolt this carb on my car and go from a 15.80 to a 15.50 in the 1/4. An extra bonus is that you can use standard holley jets in it. Number 64 jets seem to work best in mine. You will need to make an adapter plate because the bolt pattern is different, or weld up you old holes in your manifold and drill matching ones in your manifold and also open up the butterfly holes in the manifold. Let me know if you have and more specific questions.
