Most every roller chain I have ever installed looked like that. I never worried about it myself.
However, the 360 Magnum engines have a tensioner in them that may be able to be adapted.

I have just rebuilt the engine and installed a (roller timing chain set from Aus) and have noticed that there is slop in the chain when fitted.The chain is not streched but I am assuming that the pitch of the chain(3/8) and the dia of the cam and crank sprockets don't tally up with the centre distances between the cam and crank sprocket.Has any member of the forum fitted a chain tensioner to a slant and is there an of the shelf chain tensioner that I can fit. Looking forward to any advice Alan from down under |

Grand Nationals used a timing chain tensioner with the stock chain, which is a standard link type timing chain. I made the mistake of putting a new one in the first time I rebuilt mine with a cloyes true roller timing set. It wore, broke and got chewed up by the lower sprocket. It never made any unusual noise but ruined the crank, oil pump, timing cover and even damaged the bores before I discovered the metal in the pan. Several other guys made the same mistake and it ended the same way. I would not even try to use a stock type of tensioner unless it was made for a roller chain. |

Thanks for the replies.Looks like I will try the motor without a tensioner.there isn't a lot of space to add a tensioner without adding links and deliberately having too much chain. Al. K |
