i was at the wrecking yard today, just lookin around and saw an 85 slant p/u. the head was a different shape than the ones on my 82 p/u and 86 van. i know the older ones had sleeves on the spark plugs so that made them look a little different but this p/u was different. just wondering

That was the peanut head. Will work on any block. If it is hydraulic, the rockers and shaft are different than the solid lifter type. The peanut head is slightly heavier and does not have as many spark plugs to select from.

The 1981-1987 Hydraulic cammed slant has a bit of a different shaped head than the older peanut plug heads, you'll notice it mostly in the rear of the rear on the passenger side where a 'dent' kind of occurs in the back of the rocker cover...

Read THIS ARTICLE about heads, and THIS about parts variations over the years.
