I installed a crank and it would not turn. All bearings and everything was installed correctly. They said it was because things were dirty but thats a bunch of bunk it was cleaned out very well before installation. I'm wondering if its a possibility that I was given the wrong crank. Are all slant cranks interchangable? They also said I might need a line honing but the other crank turned beautifuly. They are regrinding that. The shop says they will do the old crank but charge me for bearings. I'm wondering if there is anyway to prove that I was given a wrong crank. Any ideas? The crank I was given as an exchange for the old one had no casting number on it. I thought that was sort of strange. Any ideas? Thanks a bunch!

Scott,

How hard did you try to turn it? If they set the bearing clearances tight, then you may not be able to spin it by hand. Even with the head off, my '68 Dart engine could not be spun with the damper/pulley by hand until it had about 20-30k miles on it. You could have undersize (e.g. 0.010/0,010") bearings with an unground crank or some other combo. I've heard of this happening and I've checked my clearances w/ plastigauge before assembling the engine. All pre-76 (forged) slant cranks are interchangeable (at least journal-wise), and I don't think a later cast crank will fit an old block at all.

Hope this helps,

Lou

the only option can think of is to mic the crank, and install the appropriate bearings. assembly lube? are you using a bolt and wrench/socket/and or breaker bar? got the slugs in it yet?...chad

if you put the shells in sdrawkcab then the tags that are suposed to seat in the grooves will fold out ant stop the crank from turning. Also, number four main can be tricky. You don't have the thrust bearing downsideup do you?

This is typical of the board. your question generates more questions. Just the facts man! We need deatials! Did you use the plastiguage? Have you ever done a crank before (being a novice is not a crime, we all have to start someplace..)

Hope thsi helps
