My '65 Dart is greasy from wheel to wheel in the back. Is there a company that offers a kit that includes all of the seals, etc. for this area? Thanks for your help! |

Unless you are going to set up the differential again it might be best to just get what you need from a normal auto parts store. Two axle bearing kits, two inner axle seals, a pinion seal and cover gasket. Thats really all there is to seal. If it's that greasy, maybe some of it is from the engine and trans? |

The white foam gaskets on either side of the brake backing plates are very important,and shouldn't be reused; if missing or defective, water will get into the wheel bearing housing and ruin the bearing. It's a sealed ball bearing, but the seal won't keep out water. I make my own gaskets for free using 1/8inch thick closed-cell polyurethane foam sheet, used in shipping for packing & padding material. Don't know if these gaskets are still available from auto parts stores. |

I have only seen 1 foam gasket between the backing plate and the bearing retainer flange. There is a steel gasket between the housing end flange and the backing plate. Did Mopar use 2 foam gaskets at one time? |

What size rear end is it? Is it a 7 1/4? As you're probably aware, if the differential yoke seal is leaking on either style housing, there's a good chance you're in for a rebuild since the yoke will have to come out to change the seal and bearing preload will have to be re-set. If it's the rear cover on a 7 1/4", that's easy enough; just a few bolts, r+r old gasket and refill diff. with lube. Axle bearing kits I've purchased for the 8 3/4 have come with gaskets, seals and new collars for the flange surface, but I can not vouch for the 7 1/4. I usually get the "green" bearing kits. Parts store stuff can vary pretty widely, I'd check the box before you leave the store! Making your own gaskets is a good idea too if the replacement stuff doesn't contain them. Here's the description from Mancini Racing on the Green kits: ..."Specifically designed by Green Ball Bearing to eliminate the production bearing retainers and axle end play adjusters. Each set contains two axle shaft bearings, two bearing retainer sleeves, two axle shaft seals and two axle flange gaskets. Fits 1965 and newer axles."\ Not sure if that's useful to you, good luck. |

There should be two foam gaskets per side; one between the brake backing plate and axle housing flange, and the other betwen the steel bearing retainer plate and brake backing plate, if I remember the assembly sequence correctly. Gasket-in-a-tube sealant might also work. |

Just wanted to update my previous post with some corrected info. You actually can fix the front pinion seal on the car. You just have to make sure that you verify the torque on the pinion nut before removing the yoke so you can replicate it after the replacement. Greg |
