I just wanted to know if there is any way we could ever compete with like say toyota's supra, wich is also an inline six but can produce sooo much horsepower, its insane.
I'm asking because a friend of mine has one and he swears by it. (and i'm tired of hearing: my inline six is better than yours?

I guess the difference is in the technoligy. They have muti-valve heads, rollers, and an insaine amount of electronics.

From what I have seen them doing with Supra motors I would have to say get used to it. He's right.

The Supra motor seems to be almost unlimited in how much power thay can get out of it all out. Plus, they have off the shelf parts availability we can only dream of.

A Slant is what it is, and does what it does. It can be made relatively fast, but we're are severely limited by a poopy head and 4" bore spacing. Add to that a 4 main block and we drive into a wall with reliability at big HP numbers.

You can spend a gazillion dollars to turbo/efi one and have a flyer, but the Supra guys can do it easier and faster. :(

Outside of the urban legend about bolting a Supra head on a slant (Supra pistons might be a more realistic possibility), it's hard to keep up with a 2JZ-GTE using a slant six. The most powerful turbo slant six out there is around 600 hp, about twice as much as a stock 2JZ - but there's Supra engines making 1,600 hp out there.

The Toyota 2JZ is built with the same approach to overkill as the slant six, but the head is about 30 years ahead of the slant six design. That's the real bottleneck in making a slant keep up with one of those motors - you can weld up a turbo manifold and buy electronics, but there's no place you'll be able to get a 24 valve DOHC cylinder head for a slant.

Don't forget the Toyota's stock bottom end that lives with 800 hp. The block, crank and rods are also 30+ years ahead of a slant.

Although the bottom end is a bit stronger, it's more by design choice than from newer technology. It's the same combination of cast iron and forged steel you'll find on a slant. It does have one big advantage - seven main bearings - and a couple little things like oil squirters under the pistons. IIRC, the 2JZ has two bolt mains, and the really high powered motors often have aftermarket four bolt conversions.

It's the Hondas that put a bunch of high tech things in their block - and to prepare one of those for boost, you've got to do almost as much work to one as what Doc did with the Twiggy buildup.

Does anyone really know what the upper limit in turbo applications is on the slant six crank, rods, or block? While RPM can kill a 225, I haven't seen much information from people probing the upper limits of what you can do with a low RPM boosted motor.

What about fully electronically controlled valves and timing. I think this is the article I read about two months ago. If it doesn't require mechanical devices. So could you theoretically build something like this for a slant? Just and idea as I'm sure it would be cost prohibitive.

Check this post. It's worth looking at again. Very impressive.
