| Post subject: | Rear wheel wobble! |
Howdy. I have my 67 dart up on jacks. I decided to see if could find the source of a vibration. My left rear wheel was going side to side. I thought I would try another wheel out to see if it was just the wheel. I took off the cragar and installed a steel 14 inch wheel and tire. Lo and behold .....still wobbly. Could this be caused by a warped brake drum? Charlie Oh yea I forgot to say. There was a weight on the drum that was protruding just a little. I ground it down to where it does not touch the wheel. I only had to take just a hair. It still didn't make the wobble stop..... |

Check the face of the axle and make sure the axle is not bent. If the car has been slid into a curb or something like that, it can easily bend the end of the axle. |

If you grab the wheel by hand can you wobble it yourself? Possible worn bearing... Run it with the wheel off, just the drum and observe that. Make sure to bottom out one or two lugnuts on the drum so it doesn't come flying off. I was chasing a vibration down recently and went through the same thing. Left wheel had significant wobble, right had a little. I rebuilt the carrier (8.75" rear) different axles new bearings and now they both wobble a little, haven't ran it with the wheels off yet but all seems well. Try swapping axles left to right? Not sure if thats possible with your rear, haven't touched a 7 1/4" in years. |

I can see it now. While holding onto a stud and turning the axle there is a low spot. It's funny how such a tiny amount of deflection can amount to such a large amount of wobble by the time it gets all the way out to the end of the tire!Run it with the wheel off, just the drum and observe that.
