Hi all Wow my first post, spent to much time on /6.com site, anyway I Have a 1979 Plymouth Volare 2dr,with a 225 super six, 727 and 8 1/4". Well she came with a 904 and 7 1/4". Researching, lots of reading and talking to friends, said those parts were weak, so I replaced the rearend first, then the trans tanked on me, so I bought a reman 727 and installed it, got the drive shaft shortend, and went hunting for a 30 spline input shaft.

Once all that was said and done about 2weeks ago she spun a rod bearing, so I figured while she was down again, I would put a shift kit in, but I don't know what to get ?!! firm shifts are fine, I have a Hurst V-matic 2 shifter, should I upgrade to a higher stall torque converter ? Anyhelp would be appreciated,

-Mike

Welcome to the board. My first piece of advice: Slow down and put your wallet away! There was no need to replace the 904 transmission with a 727; the 904 is not "weak". The 8¼" swap is good, but it's often a waste of money to replace parts just because some friend says "Ooooh, that's gotta go, it's weak!".

What are your plans for the car? How do you intend driving it? It's best to lay out a clear, coherent goal in terms of performance, driveability, fuel economy, durability and utility. Start at the start (with a plan), not at the end (with a torque converter).

yea I know I get a little carried away sometimes, sorry  IT was late !! I want to keep her somewhat streetable, turbocharged/intercooled/carb'd, FI down the road, poly bushings all around, aluminium k-frame-body mounts, sure grip probably 3.73's, bigger brakes, but not gi-norm-ous, and 17" possibily 18" torque thrust's. I'll probably tune it to be pretty street friendly, then change the jets for the track. I know the 904 is a pretty stout trans, but I have a long history with them, and nothing ever turned out well for me, so i tried something different,

For future reference, I have never seen even 1 Slant race car that runs a 727. I run all the V-8 guts in my 904 with a trans brake. :D

I have run the same 904 in my race car for 6 years it is a full race car 12,48 in the 1/4 mile. Probably 2000 rounds of drag racing. I did change the fluid this year but it looked like the new i put back in. 8 inch 4500 stall converter. Thanks Ron Parker :D
