I am considering a console shifter, are our transmissions an a904? Will the shifter work on any 904 transmission, v8 or slant six?

What shifter are you considering? Most aftermarket 3 speed automatic shifters will work fine with the 904 automatic that is in over 99% of slant 6 passenger cars. Factory console shifted automatics have body differences and sometimes minor transmission mounting boss differences that make fitting a factory console shifter more difficult.

I don't believe they'll work on pushbutton shifted transmissions, 64 and earlier. I'm not sure about the cable operated 65 models. Transmissions from 66 and later had lever style shift linkage which I believe is what aftermarket shifters are designed to fit.

Growing older is unavoidable but growing up is strictly optional.

Icaneat..

I use the Promatic 2 because I did a truck bench seat installation and needed the extra shifter handle length to be about 20 inches in air for knob. Promatic 2 is basically a Promatic with longer handle. Pretty easy swap really. I had a rod for accelerator, not a cable so had to fab up a linkage to mate to 4bbl and fab up a bracket for a cable type kickdown. I used a Bouchillon Performance Holley adapter for the throttle lever to accelerator and kickdown...really easy. Bouchillon also makes a torqueflite cabling kit that has good pictures in its manual (on line) so you can see how to hook up the tranny. It is a matter of put a hole in the floor so the knob is where you want it in space and bolt it all up. Pretty simple.
