Well I have been trying to do all my planing and parts buying right now seeing as my car is 3000 miles away for another couple months. I have a 64 valiant with the 3speed column shift. I am doing a complete engine rebuild on the six and it will be on the bottle starting at 50hp and working its way to 150hp shot. I was told in past forums that the clutch and tranny wont take it.

I really want to stay with a manual but I cant afford a new engine and a 4 or 5 speed swap. So I have been thinking about going with an automatic because I will not miss a shift and it can be cheaper. I have a 67 A904 that came with the block I am using, which was rebuilt 30k ago and has a shift kit. I also have the Radiator with the cooler. Now the question is what else is needed? I know I need a way to switch gears so I am looking B&Ms Z-Gate Shifter. What is the best kickdown linkage to use? And can I still use the original tranny mount. Is there anything else I am missing? Thank you for all your wisdom knowledge and .02cents. Michael

The main problem you'll have is that the pilot hole in the '64 crank is smaller than the nose of the '67 converter. To further complicate it, the input shaft of the '67 tranhy is spline differently that a '64 converter so you won't get away with a simple swap. You will need to have the '67 converter modified to fit the '64 crank or get a custom converter made.

I thought 68 was the change to large input shaft trans and large crank?

I thought it was 67 but I could be all wet; wouldn't be the first time.

I am sorry I didnt make it clear about the engine but the block and crank are the same years as the tranny and was already running as a combo. But one other question I have is will the drive shaft from the 3speed bolt to the automatic not sure if they are the same lenght? Thanks Michael

If the 3 speed is from the 64, it will have a ball & trunnion joint whereas your later transmission will have the common slip joint - you'll need a slip joint driveshaft of approximately 53 & 13/32 as measured from center of u joint cap to u joint cap.

You will also need a different speedo cable. I think a 66 cable is the correct one to use. That cable will fit your speedo head, and the later trans.
PS: Don't throw out the speedo gear from the 64 trans, they are hard to find. I would save the cable also.

I did this same swap in my '64 and you will need a different drive shaft. I got mine from the wrecker for $20.00 out of a '74 Duster and it worked perfect. I also used a steering column from a '66 Valiant and with minimal mods it was also a good donor. Sounds like you'll probably go floor shift auto though.

Yep, the driveshaft in my '66 came out of my Duster too.

The convertor pilot and trans input shaft changes started in '68.

It started with the '68 model year, but with Mopars usual commitment to using up parts, there may be some large pilots in '67 or some small ones leftover in '68.

Ok so I will still need a kick down linkage what is the best to use with a holley 4bbl dose anyone have part #s and prices and the same for the speedo cable and gear. If i can get the parts for less than $300 then I will do the swap but right now I cant sell the station wagon in order to have the money for the engine rebuild so I may just pull the 170 and 3speed out of the wagon just so I have a engine in the 2door to get the car out here to North Carolina and then spary the Nos. Till something breaks. Thanks for all the help.
