I am told that a manual 3 speed tranny is not interchangable with an automatic on the /6. Apparently there is something about how one meshes up at the back end of the engine. Is this true? I want to put an automatic on my '64 /6 (it currently has a 3 speed manual), but need to make sure this is possible.

Any words of wisdom are appreciated!!

You just need to get the trans/converter/driveshaft that match the car. The early Slants and A bodies do have some quirks, but you can install an automatic. :D

Will also need a floor shifter or automatic steering columm, with related linkage. A kickdown linkage from the throttle to the trans, is also MANDATORY. Depending on the year of the trans, the speedo cable can have an issue, but can be resolved.

The others are right — as long as you select the right components, there's nothing preventing you converting to an automatic. What year and model is your car, and (this is important) what year is the engine?

Ooops, can't believe I missed that. Good catch, Dan. That is actually the most important thing.
